Trade Ideas

Global trade idea - The Vanguard Mid-Cap Value ETF (VOE) - BUY

We initiate a long position with a target price of $148 (reward/risk ratio of 3.1:1). We recommend a stop-loss at $134.

The Vanguard Mid-Cap Value ETF (VOE) seeks to track the investment performance of the CRSP US Mid Cap Value Index, an unmanaged benchmark representing mid-capitalisation US value stocks.

The objective of the VOE ETF is to provide investors with exposure to mid-cap companies that are believed to be undervalued or have strong potential for future growth. Holdings are selected based on certain value-oriented criteria, such as low price to earnings (PE) ratios, low price to book (PB) ratios, and high dividend yields.

Technically, the price appears to be developing a symmetrical triangle pattern (see the black converting trendlines on the main chart as well as the insert).

A symmetrical triangle pattern implies a period of consolidation. The volume tends to diminish, indicating a lack of strong buying or selling pressure.

Within the symmetrical triangle pattern, there are support and resistance levels indicated by the lower and upper trendlines. Investors can monitor these levels and consider buying the ETF when the price approaches the support level or selling when it approaches the resistance level.

Based on forward calculations of the Relative Strength Index (RSI) indicator, the ETF will be overbought at $160.00, classifying our target price of $148 as realistic.

We suggest a medium at-risk allocation for this trade. Increase exposure for a break above $138.00.

Buy/Sell Rationale

Technical Analysis:

  • The ETF recently crossed above its 200-day simple moving average (SMA) of $134.00, which is considered a bullish signal.
  • The start of upside price momentum according to the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) indicator supports the bullish trend direction.
  • The recent sideways trajectory of the On-balance volume (OBV) indicator - which uses volume flow to predict share price movements - provides further support to the bullish market sentiment.
  • The lower panel shows the Moving Average Divergence Convergence (MACD) indicator for the E TF. A bullish crossover occurs when the MACD line crosses above the MACD signal line (see the black arrow), suggesting a potential uptrend.
  • Our entry range for this trade is between $136 and $140 - a drop below the bottom-end would indicate a structural change in the trend, providing reason to negate the idea.
  • Our target price is $148 (~7.7% upside from current levels). This level is slightly above the upper range of the symmetrical triangle pattern.
  • The proposed time to exit is mid-September 2023, though investors can adjust for either a longer or shorter horizon, depending on price behaviour.
  • A drop below $134 (~2.5% downside from current levels) is of major concern, and as such is recommended as a stop-loss.

Long-term fundamental view:

  • By investing in the VOE ETF, investors gain access to a broad range of US mid-cap value ETFs in a single investment vehicle. This allows for diversification across multiple companies and sectors.
  • The ETF consist of ~193 different companies, with the largest weighting 1.45%.
  • The top 5 constituents include Arthur J Gallagher & Co., PACCAR Inc, Corteva Inc., Nucor Corp., and Carrier Global Corp.
  • Sectoral exposure includes Electric (~12.34%), REITS (~10.24%), Insurance (~7.90%), Diversified Financial (~5.46%), and Food (~4.31%), among various others.
  • Apart from a current disconnect in valuation, these mid-cap stocks have higher growth potential compared to large-cap stocks, particularly in the event of improving market conditions and investor sentiment.
  • Stock market breadth in the US is quite low currently - meaning that market movements are driven by a few large cap companies. An improvement in breadth could benefit smaller market capitalisation companies.
  • The underlying companies are exposed to macroeconomic conditions in the US and their share prices will be impacted by global market sentiment.
