Global Trade Idea: FirstEnergy Corp. (FE US) - BUY

By Peet Serfontein & Khumbulani Kunene

We initiate a long position with a target price of $45.00 and a stop-loss of $39.00 (Risk/reward ratio 1:2.7).

FirstEnergy Corp. is a leading electric utility company which, through its subsidiaries, generates, transmits and distributes electricity and offers exploration, production and distribution of natural gas. FirstEnergy also provides energy management and other energy related services. The company controls more than 24 000 miles of transmission lines and has two regional transmission operation centres.

Headquartered in Akron, Ohio, FirstEnergy serves over six million customers across the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regions. The company is focused on modernising the grid, enhancing reliability, and transitioning toward cleaner energy solutions to meet evolving regulatory and environmental standards.

Technically, a developing symmetrical triangle pattern presents as a promising investment opportunity for the stock (see the black converging trendlines on the main chart). This patten highlights a period of consolidation before a potential breakout and is characterised by lower highs and higher lows, signalling that buyers and sellers are steadily converging into a point of equilibrium. A bullish breakout is confirmed when the price moves above the upper trendline on increasing volumes.

A price in the accumulation phase of the Wyckoff price cycle also supports a bullish case for the stock (see the insert). This further supports our bull case by highlighting that institutional money is discreetly acquiring shares at discounted prices before a major uptrend begins. The stock typically moves sideways (within a range). A breakout above the resistance confirms that the accumulation is complete, leading to a markup phase where prices trend higher.

Fading downside price momentum per the MACD indicator, as well as the recent uptick trajectory of the on-balance volume (OBV) indicator, supports our bullish view.

Buy/Sell Rationale:

Technical Analysis:

    • The lower panel shows the occurrence of the Three Outside Up Japanese candlestick pattern, denoted with a reading of one. This patten is a strong bullish reversal signal that occurs after a downtrend or consolidation. It starts with a small bearish candle, followed by a larger bullish candle that completely engulfs the first one, and then another bullish candle that closes higher. This pattern indicates that buyers have gained control and are overpowering sellers, suggesting that downward momentum could reverse.
    • Our recommended entry range is $40.00 to $41.00, or as close as possible to our reference price of $40.63 - a drop below this range would indicate a substantial change in price dynamics, giving reason to negate the trade idea.
    • Our target price is $45.00, representing ~10.8% upside from current levels.
    • Based on the forward calculation of the Relative Strength Index (RSI) indicator, the stock will be overbought at ~ $55.00, making our profit target realistic.
    • Our proposed time to exit is end-April 2025, but investors can adjust for either a longer or shorter time horizon, depending on price behaviour.
    • A drop below $39.00, or 4.0% below current levels, would suggest weakening technicals and a stop-loss is recommended at this level.
    • We expect moderate fluctuations in the price and therefore suggest a medium at-risk allocation for this trade. Increase exposure for a break above $41.00.

Fundamental view

    • FirstEnergy Corp. operates through two segments, namely:
      • Regulated Distribution accounting for ~85% of revenue, which distributes electricity through FirstEnergy's utility operating companies. This segment sells electricity to residential, commercial, and industrial customers, and controls ~3 580 MWs of regulated electric generation capacity located in West Virginia and Virginia.
      • Regulated Transmission (~15% of revenue) provides transmission infrastructure owned and operated by the Transmission Companies and certain of FirstEnergy's utilities to transmit electricity from generation sources to distribution facilities. Transmission operations include ~24 000 miles of lines and two regional transmission operation centres.
    • FE operates and serves customers in a service area of 65 000 square miles in Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia, where they have minimal competition.
    • Recently, FE has concluded strategic disposals to strengthen its financial position, particularly with the sale of an additional 30% ownership in its LLC subsidiary to Brookfield Super-Core Infrastructure for $3.5 billion.
    • The company has invested heavily in its multi-year investment initiative, Energize365, which seeks to modernise and enhance the reliability of the electric grid to meet current and future energy demands. Running between 2024 to 2028, the programme intends to invest a total of $26 billion in its distribution and transmission systems. This investment will enhance grid modernisation, improve support for clean energy transition, increase reliability and security, and allow for customer-focused investments.
    • Financially, FE has aligned its growth strategy to its Energize365 plan, targeting 6% to 8% annual operating earnings per share growth rate medium term.
    • In 3Q24, earnings from continuing operations softened to $419 million ($0.73 per basic and diluted share) on revenue of $3.5 billion. The performance was impacted by several headwinds such as lower customer demand from mild weather compared to the norm, lower distribution revenue from Ohio due to Electric Security Plan V order and high storm restoration costs.
    • An improvement is expected in 4Q24, with growth anticipated to rebound to 19% on the top line and 14% on the bottom line.
    • From a risk perspective, the company faces regulatory and legal risk as they need to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations. Change in policies may affect profitability. Climate risks continue to persist, particularly with extreme weather such as hurricanes, heatwaves, snowstorms and wildfires, which could damage infrastructure.
