Local Trade Idea: Bidcorp (BID) - BUY

By Peet Serfontein & Jalpa Bhoolia

Bidcorp is a market-leading food service product distributor across several geographies including the United Kingdom, Europe, Middle East, South America, the Asia-Pacific region, and South Africa. The company's business units operate across the food and ingredient manufacturing sectors, such as catering, hospitality, leisure, baked products, poultry, meat, seafood, and processing. The strategy is to grow organically in existing regions and acquisitively in new.

Technically, a share that is developing a base presents an enticing investment opportunity (see the grey shaded rectangle on the main chart).

Base formations precede significant price movements while a consolidation period reflects strengthening fundamentals, increasing the likelihood of sustained upward momentum once the price breaks out of the base.

The share is in the Markup phase out of the Wyckoff Price Cycle, which also supports a bullish case. This phase indicates that demand is outweighing supply, leading to a sustained upward trend. As higher highs and higher lows develop, it reinforces the case for continued price appreciation.

Additionally, the price is developing a trough per the Elliott Wave theory, which is supportive of a bullish scenario. This trough represents a turning point, where selling pressure diminishes and buying interest increases, aligning with expectations of a broader uptrend.

We suggest a low to medium capital at risk allocation to this trade. Increase exposure for a break above R456.

Buy/Sell Rationale:

Technical Analysis:

    • The lower panel shows the Relative Price Strength (RSI) indicator for the share - take note of the symmetrical triangle pattern development.
    • The bullish case for a symmetrical triangle pattern developing in the RSI, particularly when the RSI is hovering around the neutral 50 level, suggests a potential breakout to the upside.
    • When the RSI is around 50, it reflects a neutral momentum, meaning the market has yet to lean strongly towards overbought or oversold conditions. A bullish breakout from the triangle in the RSI would typically involve the RSI rising above the triangle's upper boundary, which could confirm an upward move in the price. This scenario suggests that bullish momentum is building, potentially leading to a significant price rally, particularly when accompanied by increasing volume.
    • Fading downside price momentum according to the MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence) histogram is supportive.
    • The share is oscillating around its 200-day simple moving average (SMA) (also see the insert on the main chart).
    • The recent sideways trajectory of the on-balance volume (OBV) indicator supports a bullish case for the share.
    • Our entry range is between around R437 and R456. Our upside target is set at R494 (+10.6% from current levels).
    • Time to exit is middle-March 2025. Keep the option open to close the trade if the price reaches our profit target in a shorter time.
    • A price below R427 (-4.4% from current levels) is a major concern for downside potential and is recommended as a stop-loss.

Long term fundamental view:

    • The company enjoys a well-diversified client base and businesses at different life cycles across developed and emerging geographies.
    • Bidcorp holds a market leading position in countries of operation that provides some pricing power in a low-margin industry.
    • Its dual strategy of targeting organic and acquisitive growth spreads risk, and a flexible balance sheet offers room for bolt-on acquisitions or a major transaction.
    • The company has shown consistent profit growth generation in constant currency terms, while operating in relatively low inflation environments. This reflects the company's ability to sustain profits without the assistance of price increases.
    • In November, the company provided a trading update for the four-month period through October 2024.
    • Despite the challenging macroeconomic environment, the group delivered a robust performance that exceeded the record performance seen in the prior comparative period and was tracking in line with management's expectations - the share rallied more than 7% following the announcement.
    • Compared to consensus, bottom-line growth is tracking behind full-year expectations, however, revenue growth came in ahead amid a relatively resilient performance across most geographies as the group continued to focus on growth in preferred sectors of the market.
    • Group margins have also held up relatively well in the current environment, which was another key highlight.
    • There remains a promising pipeline of future opportunities, both organic and acquisitive, affirming the effectiveness of the group's long-held strategic approach. The outlook remains positive, and management looks forward to further improvements in the macro-environment as interest rates decline and consumer sentiment improves.
    • Risks include continued competitive pressure in what is already a low-margin industry, adverse currency translation impacts, the loss of technically skilled and experienced people, a lack of significant annuity income, and execution risks around future acquisitions.
