Local Trade Idea: Momentum Metropolitan Holdings (MTM) - BUY

Peet Serfontein & Jalpa Bhoolia.

Momentum Metropolitan Holdings is a South African-based financial services group. Its core business is focused on long and short-term insurance, asset management, savings, investment, healthcare administration and employee benefits. These product and service solutions are provided through two well-known operating brands, namely Metropolitan and Momentum.

Technically, a share that is developing a rounding bottom pattern presents an interesting investment opportunity (see the overlay on the price action).

A rounding bottom pattern (a saucer bottom) is considered bullish and signals a potential downtrend reversal. The pattern is characterised by a steady price decline, after which the price stabilises and then gradually increases, thus resembling the shape of a saucer. The pattern indicates that selling pressure is diminishing, while the gradual increase in the price during the right side of the pattern reflects growing interest from buyers.

The stock is in a markup phase - supportive of a bullish trend. The price begins to move higher after a period of accumulation as investors who have identified the share's potential during the accumulation phase begin buying in larger volumes.

According to the RSI (Relative Strength Index), the stock will be overbought at ~R25.00, which classifies our profit target of R24.50 as realistic.

We suggest a low capital at-risk allocation to this trade. Increase exposure for a break above R22.20.

Buy/Sell Rationale

Technical Analysis:

  • The lower panel shows the number of simple moving average crossovers. The crossovers look specifically at the eight, 13, 21, 50, 100, and 200-week period moving averages. Take note of the recent upward trajectory of the indicator, which signals a bullish crossover between the eight and 13-week period averages.
  • The RSI is in oversold territory when the reading is below 30 and regarded as overbought when the reading is above 70. The current reading of the RSI is 59, leaving some room to the upside.
  • Fading downside price momentum, according the MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence) histogram, is supportive.
  • The share remains above its 200-day simple moving average - another bullish indicator.
  • The recent sideways trajectory of the on-balance volume (OBV) indicator shows that money remains in the share.
  • Our entry range is between R21.20 to R22.20. Our upside target is set at R24.50 (+13.2% from current levels).
  • Our proposed time to exit is mid-June 2024. Keep the option open to close the trade if the price reaches our profit target in a shorter time.
  • A drop below R20.50 (~5.3% below current levels) is a concern for downside potential. As such, a stop-loss is recommended at this level.

Fundamental view:

  • The company recently released a solid trading statement for the interim period ended 31 December 2023.
  • The top-line was well ahead of expectations, which prompted upward revisions from analysts. Earnings were positively impacted by a favourable change in the shape of the yield curve in Momentum Life and Momentum Metropolitan Africa, improved persistency experience in Metropolitan Life, robust life annuity sales volumes in Momentum Investments and strong underwriting experience in Momentum Corporate. Mortality and morbidity claims experience was positive and improved further.
  • The result is coming off a strong first quarter that was characterised by robust AUM growth supported by net flows and positive markets, improved mortality experience, a pleasing underwriting performance and new business sales, despite a challenging operating environment.
  • On distribution, Momentum has been gaining market share in both Momentum Life and Metropolitan.
  • The company boasts strong free cash flow generation, and capital allocation has improved. Despite committing to buying back shares, the group is still paying a healthy dividend.
  • Guardrisk will add decent growth to MTM in the next few years, which could enhance growth overall.
  • Risks to our fundamental view include organic growth constraints, which have been problematic in the past. The consumer environment is muted, and growth is expected to be strained for some time. Competition remains high, which may threaten its margin expansion strategy.
