Three decades of growth built on family values and smart partnerships

 

Bathroom Bizarre has spent almost 30 years building a reputation for quality, choice and value. What began in the mid-1990s as an opportunity to offer customers a wider range of products has grown into one of South Africa's best-known bathroom and homeware retailers.

Founder and Group Managing Director Dudley Turner says the business was built on a simple insight: "Customers want good quality, good choice and, of course, to save money." That customer focus has remained central ever since.

A major part of Bathroom Bizarre's identity is its strong family-business culture. Turner says that approach shapes how the business treats both staff and customers, creating a level of care and service people instantly feel.

"Bathroom Bizarre is pretty much a family organisation," he says.

"The level of service and care translates from being a family business."

This culture is reflected in exceptional staff retention, with many of the company's earliest employees still part of the business today, one of its proudest milestones.

Bathroom Bizarre's willingness to diversify has also been key to its long-term success. Rather than limiting its offering, the business has consistently expanded into new products, opportunities and markets. This includes investing in manufacturing capabilities, allowing the business to produce selected products locally, strengthen quality control and create greater flexibility across its supply chain.

"Diversity has been important in looking for different opportunities to expand the business and different markets," Turner says. "That has been a real standout factor for the brand."

As the business nears its 30-year milestone, Turner views it as a testament to the loyalty of both customers and employees.

"That means 30 years of support from our customers," he says.

Sustained growth has also required the right financial partner. FNB stood out when Bathroom Bizarre was searching for a new bank.

"FNB provided a very impressive pitch," Turner says. "They understood the business after a very brief introduction."

Turner says FNB's support has helped the business improve its offering, invest in growth opportunities and operate more efficiently. Access to funding, industry-specific expert advice and digital banking tools have been especially valuable.

"Funding has been significant in offering a better service to our customers," he says. "And online banking is seamless, user friendly and very important in our business."

Turner also values working with people who have strong commercial understanding, something he considers crucial in a climate of rising costs, changing customer behaviour and increasing competition.

If one lesson defines Bathroom Bizarre's journey, Turner says, it is resilience.

"We make sure that we never give up."

Bathroom Bizarre's story demonstrates that long-term success is built on strong values, loyal people, adaptability and a willingness to evolve.
