Financial Media Network (FMN)

FMN is a digital advertising service. It helps the group to enable more relevant banking and lifestyle campaigns on platforms, such as social media and search websites, to customers.

FMN uses customer information in a protected way to group customers into broad categories based on similar patterns and interests. These groups are used to identify relevant campaigns to display to customers on digital platforms. Customer identities are not directly shared with advertisers or digital platforms, and safeguards are in place to minimise the risk of re-identification.

How does the Group use information for partner campaigns?

FMN may use and analyse customers personal information to present customers with relevant campaigns from approved third-party partners via digital platforms such as social media sites or search websites.

This may include:

Grouping customers based on general patterns and interests.

Processing customers' protected information (for example, through hashing or similar privacy-enhancing techniques) in an access-controlled environment.

Preparing audience groups for digital platform advertising and reporting.

What information is used?

To do this, the Group may use:

Contact identifiers, such as the customer's email address or mobile number in a protected form.

Transactional and behavioural information, such as spending patterns or banking activity, which is used to group customers with similar patterns and interests.

Insights derived from a customer's use of or interactions with the group's products and services, where this is relevant to FMN's advertising and customer engagement activities.

How does the Group protect
customer information?

The group processes customers information using a secure matching system known as a clean room. A clean room is a controlled environment where information is processed in a protected form so that directly identifiable personal information is not shared with advertising platforms or approved partners.

This means:

  • Customer information is protected before it is used.

  • Directly identifiable personal information is not shared with advertisers or digital platforms.

  • Processing takes place in a secure environment designed to protect a customer's identity.

A third-party clean room provider may facilitate this process on our behalf.

Who may benefit from FMN campaigns?

FMN may promote campaigns from approved third-party advertisers, such as companies offering retail, Iifestyle, telecommunications, travel or other consumer products and services. Please note that at all times, these partners do not receive your personal information.

How does the Group use AI technology and what are the essential elements of the Group's AI systems?

FMN campaigns will utilise artificial intelligence (AI) to help offer customers tailored solutions. For example, automated profiling may be done to determine which campaigns are most relevant to customers.

The AI tools used by FMN are well-tested and follow strict privacy and security standards. These systems are subject to ongoing monitoring, human oversight, and controls designed to identify and mitigate bias or unintended outcomes.

Your choice and right to object

You have the right to object to your information being used for FMN processing.

This applies to the underlying activities that make FMN possible, including:

Audience profiling, where information is used to place customers into broad groups.

Data partnering, where protected identifiers are matched in the secure environment.

Preparation of audience groups for use on digital platforms.

This is separate from, and broader than, opting out of receiving advertisements. This is governed by the terms of use of the digital platforms you use.

You can exercise this choice at any time by taking one or more of the following steps

You may control whether your information is used for FMN campaign purposes at any time by using the 'Digital Campaigns & Cookie Preferences' tool available on our website by visiting fnb.co.za, selecting 'About & Legal' and then 'Privacy & Consent' and then 'Digital Campaigns & Cookie Preferences'.

This allows you to accept or reject categories of campaigns and cookies such as performance cookies, marketing cookies or partner campaigns. If you opt out of the 'Partner Campaigns' option, your information will no longer be used for FMN profiling, matching or activation.

You may manage your preferences for partner advertising preferences with the relevant social media partners and platform directly and/or via the applicable advertising channel.
