The Process


1. Register + pay
Visit the Department of Home Affairs website
Select 'eChannel'
Complete the registration process + enter your account details
Login to your Online Banking profile
Approve payment by selecting 'Pay', then 'eFiling'

2. Choose a branch + book your appointment
Login to your eChannel profile
Select a branch (FNB Lynnwood, FNB Centurion Lifestyle, FNB 4 Merchant Place, FNB Greenpoint, FNB Burgersfort, FNB Cornubia and FNB The Glen)
Select a time and date for your appointment
Print the confirmation page

3. Visit the branch
Visit the FNB branch at the date and time you have selected
Bring your green ID book (or police affidavit in case of lost/stolen ID) when you visit the branch

Remember
Photos will be taken at the branch
You will receive an SMS to notify you once the Smart ID is ready for collection
Bring your green ID book along when you collect the Smart ID

Rules


  1. To qualify for a Smart ID, you must be a South African citizen
  2. To apply for a Smart ID, you need to register and create an eChannel profile, approve the payment via your FNB Online Banking profile and make a booking at a branch
  3. Unfortunately, no Smart ID payments can be made in the branch - only via FNB Online Banking
  4. Branches with the service include: FNB Lynnwood, FNB Centurion Lifestyle, FNB 4 Merchant Place, FNB Greenpoint, FNB Burgersfort, FNB Cornubia and FNB The Glen)
  5. Photos are taken in-branch
  6. When visiting the branch for your fingerprints please bring your green ID book (if your green ID book has been lost or stolen please bring a police affidavit)
  7. The process in branch takes approximately 15 minutes
  8. You will receive an SMS from the Department of Home Affairs once your Smart ID or passport is ready for collection
  9. Please bring your green ID book to collect your Smart ID or passport
  10. Both parents to accompany child for passport applications
  11. One parent to accompany child for ID applications
  12. A Smart ID costs R140 and a Passport cost R400. Please note that if your passport has been lost or stolen and is still valid the Department will charge a replacement fee of R800 instead of R400. If your ID has been lost or stolen please bring a police affidavit when you apply in branch stating as such.
  13. The confirmation of application must also be brought when collecting either Smart ID or passport.
  14. Senior citizens do not pay
  15. Refer to the Department of Home Affairs website under 'Notices' to see the latest Rules & Regulations.

What is eChannel?


eChannel is a web based tool that will enable eligible South Africans to apply for their Smart ID simply by visiting the Department of Home Affairs website, completing your details, paying for the document and securing an appointment to finalise the applications process. Unfortunately, no payment can be made by credit or cheque card in the branch.

Once the eChannel application is complete, what is the next step?


The applicant will visit the branch at the selected time of their appointment. The applicant's fingerprints and photographs will be captured to complete the process.

Will this service be available in all branches?


The service is currently only available at the following seven branches:

  • Lynnwood (Grove Shopping Mall)
  • Centurion Lifestyle
  • 4 Merchant Place
  • FNB Greenpoint
  • Burgersfort
  • FNB Cornubia
  • FNB The Glen
A national roll-out to selected branches in each province will be executed within the next year.

Why are applications via eChannel only open to people aged 25 to 40?


The Home Affairs eChannel system can only handle 2000 users concurrently. In order to handle the large number of volumes expected, the system has been restricted to a certain age group. The Bank takes guidance from the Department of Home Affairs on operational matters related to eChannel. Once a decision has been made by the Department of Home Affairs to open up eChannel to a wider group of people we will communicate with our customers.

FNB in partnership with the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) has launched the application of Smart ID and passport (new/ renewal) to the public. Apply online and collect at one of these FNB Branches:
