The investment has currency exposure (e.g. dollar). If the rand weakens, your investment will benefit from the foreign currency gain - and the opposite if the rand gains strength. This option is the closest to physically owning the offshore share.

Quanto
This means that any rand/currency fluctuation will not affect the return of the investment.

What is an ETN?

An exchange-traded note (ETN) is a type of security that is issued by a financial institution like FirstRand Bank. All FNB ETNs have been listed from R10, giving investors affordable exposure to foreign shares.

An ETN's price fluctuates based on the underlying performance of the instrument it tracks. Even though investors do not physically own any shares, they obtain exposure to the company's performance based on the fluctuating ETN price. This means if an Amazon ETN is purchased, the value of the ETN will fluctuate based on the performance of the Amazon share value itself. The better the company performs, the higher the value of the ETN and the more profit investors will make.
